What is a laser and how does it work?
The term laser is an abbreviation for "light amplification
by Stimulated emission of Radiation". Energy is produced and
the laser emits a narrow uniform light beam which, when focused
through a microscope, produces either heat, coagulation, cutting,
or micro explosions in certain eye tissues. Various types of
ophthalmic lasers are used to treat different types of eye
problems. Ophthalmic lasers are usually named according to the
gas contained in the plasma tube. There are two kinds of beams
used in treating eye care conditions, Argon gas which emits a
blue-green light beam, and Krypton gas which emits a red or
yellow light beam.
Which diseases can be treated with the laser?
Diseases of the Retina: Retinal tears or holes,
which can lead to detachment of the retina, may be treated with
laser coagulation, most commonly using the Argon Laser. Symptoms
of retinal tears often include a sudden onset of flashes or
floaters in one eye.
Diabetic Retinopathy: is a major cause of
blindness. There are two major types of diabetic Retinopathy, one
form is characterized by the growth of new blood vessels on the
surface of the retina, which may lead to hemorrhage and scarring
of the retina. A second form is characterized by leakage of small
blood vessels in the retina causing reduced vision.
Glaucoma: This disease affects at least two out of
every 100 elderly Americans. In untreated cases, the optical
nerve becomes damaged, because of the fluid pressure within the
eye. Glaucoma more that any other eye condition needs to be
detected early if treatment is to be successful.
Macular Degeneration: This disease never leads to
total blindness but can severely affect the central or reading
vision. In certain cases it may be treated with the Argon or
Krypton laser. Unfortunately most patients with this disease
cannot benefit because of the gradual deterioration of the
central retina. Ophthalmic laser treatment attempts to destroy
abnormal blood vessels so that hemorrhage or scarring will not
decrease central vision.
Other disease that may be treated with the laser include: Eales,
histoplasmosis and some tumors of the eye.
