Questions & Answers about Radial Keratotomy

Nearsightedness Living Life with Crutches

Is the Surgery Painful?

For most patients, there is no pain during the procedure because a topical eye drop is used and acts as an anesthetic to numb the eye. Several hours after the operation, many patients complain of a scratchy and itchy sensation; this is aggravating to some patients. In most cases, post operative medication alleviates the discomfort, and most people have no complaints 48 to 72 hours after the procedure.

You'll be awake throughout the entire procedure. If fact, we'll be talking to you and your participation is important. You will, however, have some mild sedation and your eye surface is totally anesthetized so that there is no pain or sensation during the procedure.

What if I am farsighted?

Currently there is a procedure called "Hexagon Keratotomy" that has been developed to eliminate Hyperopia (farsightedness). The procedure is similar to RK in that microscopic incisions help to "steepen" the cornea. These incisions help to flatten the cornea so that light rays can more normally focus on the retina.

What is Astigmatism and can it be corrected?

The eye normally shaped like a basketball, whereas an astigmatic eye is shaped like a football. Transverse incisions are used to correct this and they are placed between the radial incisions. This can be done simultaneously during the RK procedure. Astigmatism of up to three diopters can be corrected.

My son is 16 and myopic, can he have the procedure?

Because the eye generally does not stabilize until a person reaches 19 or 20, we do not perform the RK procedure on those who are younger. Only patients who have stable prescription for 12 months are eligible.

Are there long term affects of RK?

RK has been performed internationally since 1972. Studies of those people who had the surgery 15 or more years ago show no signs of variability or unexpected problems. Most major studies, including the most famous long term RK study, the PERK study, have found RK to be not only safe and effective in the short term, but safe and effective in the long term as well. By no means is RK considered "investigation" or "experimental".

Why are there so many doctors, including my own optometrist, who feel that this procedure should not even be considered?

In many cases, they simply have not been updated on the most current literature relating to the safety and effectiveness of this procedure.

Will this surgery inhibit my ability to see at night?

Typically your eye has healed from surgery within about four to six weeks. At this time, many people find that they have better night vision than they had before.
