[OCMSB meets to discuss and review applicants. You can reach board members on the "Board Membership Page".The board has quidelines upon it by NY State education law and can meet with a prospective student at any time. A contract for Medical Scholarship cannot by law be arranged until an acceptance letter is provided at a duly Approved USA Stateside Medical School for a New York State Resident.]
[The concept of the Scholarship Arrangement as formulated in 1966 was to insure general practitioners to serve the Orleans County Population. Over the Years Med Students have met with the board to request study in a specialty that would benefit the Medical Community, e.g. OB-Gyn, Ophthalmology, Surgeon or Cardiology. These requests were approved. Request for a Brain Surgeon or Hand Specialist were not since a larger population would be necessary to sustain a successful practice.]
[The County Attorney will prepare a contract for you to review with your legal councel. As always, both the County and the "Doc's" must be on the same page. The contract will be available for review when the interview process begins and upon request a copy will be provided once the "Acceptance to Medical School" is received by the OCMSB. Since the internship year (PGY1) is now a paid experience, the board can approve that money can be advanced at an aaccellerated rate of 1/4th $38,000 (amended Feb 2011 from $18,000) per year of education, or $4,500 (amended Feb 2001 from 2,250) per semester. The payback time is still 6 years.]
[The contract with the County provides for payback with interest. It would be more rewarding to have you practice in Orleans County but plans change and there are provisions for that. Also, the Scholar must interface with anyone on the board at least twice yearly. Once face to face and once by mail, email, holiday card or phone. The purpose is to keep all parties involved fully in contact for this 7 to 9 year endeavor.]
[The board meets at least once each year. Special meetings are held as needed or at the request of the legislature.. You can contact any board member or the legislature at any time an ask for information. See the "Board of Directors" page in this site for board members you may know. Meetings are cleared thru the legislature calendar and information is available from the county administrator Charles H. Nesbitt, Jr. 1-585-589-7053 Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:00am (EST)
[The OCMSB has guidelines binding upon it by NY State Education Law. Board members and/or legislature members can meet with a prospective student at any time. However, a contract for Medical Scholarship cannot by law be arranged until an acceptance letter is provided at a duly Approved USA Stateside Medical School for a New York State Resident. Therefore, the OCMSB will convene to discuss appropriations and interviews after Medical School Acceptance.]
