Your major
Your Major is not as important as your grades; and get excellent grades! Although you must preform well on the prerequisit courses (Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, etc) many are now admitted to Med College with 'out of the box' majors. It goes without stateing it, you also must score well on entrance exams, Med-CATTS.
Choosing a majorg
Pre-Med students can major in any field. Meet with the Pre med advisor to help you plan a program of courses to complete prerequisite courses for your major. But, take some fun courses to broaden your horizon. Northwest had a 'Sculpture' Major accepted when she noted in the interview a strong interest in asthetic surgery.
Be active, volunteer
Medicine is a field that demands ability to balance a busy schedule. This is not the time to sit back and watch the world go by! You should be able to present a wide list of interests, volunteer achievements, and community service projects as well as a strong academic record. Plan on this from the beginning so you are not troubled on interview day!
Find out how to pay?
If you have been accepted and looking for tuition money, good news! The lending institutions feel that 'docs' are a good bet and willing to speak to you about financing. This is especially true after you finish your training and set up an office; either on you own or with a pre-existing group. There are programs like this that will bridge the gap between poverty and success for those years in training. And if you can be resourceful for the four didactic years or school, you will actually get a paycheck when you start your fifth (PGY1) or internship year.
