2003: The plans for a Medina Community Garage Sale were formulated in the
Summer of 2002 by Medina Native Sherry Wheatley. The Event Concept was presented
to several civic organizations and financed the first year when it was organized
by Coordinator, Sherry Wheatley with a small number of of volunteers from the
Medina Lions Club Community. The Committee met on Wednesdays to brain storm
ideas and prepare a plan of action.
The purpose of the Community Garage Sale was to bring together many small
Garage Sales in one area on one day while celebrating the arrival of Summer.
Instead of traveling to several towns to look for bargains, a thousand yard
sales would be displaying their wares at the Same Time on Saturday. Craft
Artists will be given a showplace for their handcrafted goods and nonprofit
groups of the Medina Community will be encouraged to raise funds by selling food
at the food court. A roving 'food cart' would offer chow to those who were not
able to visit the Food Court at the Old Pickle Factory.
There would be a charge for the 'Preferred Exhibit Space' located on the "Old Pickle Factory Parade Grounds" and an opportunity to 'advertise' in a Garage Sale Flyer ($7.00) prepared and distributed by the Lake Country Penny Saver. Participants who had surplus items at the end of the day will be able to drop them off or have them picked up. An auction of all Unsold Donated Treasurers would take place at 5:00 pm along with a chicken Bar-B-Que Dinner.
To encourage participation, there would be no charges to anyone who participates in their own yard or that of the many business parking lots open for the event (there will be a $10 fee for an published ad though). There is room for approximately 120 craft booths and 14 food booths. Attendance is expected to reach close to 6,500 people.
The Profit from the event will be used by the Lions Club for Community Projects, purchase of Eye Exam's and Appliances, annual Scholarships, New York State Speech and Hearing Clinic and the Batavia Blind School.
2006: The participation grows every year. The "Drag it, Pull it, Push it" Auction will be dropped this year.
